General Richard Cripwell sends his best wishes to three athletes who are competing in Paris 2024, as he reflects on a Lieutenant-Governor from the past.
Lieutenant General Sir Philip Neame VC is the only person ever to be awarded both the Victoria Cross and an Olympic gold medal.
He was awarded the highest decoration for valour in the British Armed Forces, for extreme bravery, in World War One.
Neame then represented Great Britain in the 1924 Paris Olympics, getting gold for shooting.
He became Guernsey’s Lieutenant-Governor following the Occupation, from 1945 to 1953.
The current Lieutenant-Governor of Guernsey, Lieutenant General Richard Cripwell says Neame was a truly remarkable man.
"Not only did he receive the nation’s highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy but, amongst other things, he also proved himself a world-class shot.
I hope very much that our three athletes in Paris in 2024 will be inspired by the success of a past resident of Government House, who won his gold medal in the same city 100 years ago."
The Bailiwick's track athlete Alastair Chalmers, tennis player Heather Watson and dressage rider Carl Hester all compete in the French Capital in the 2024 Olympics.
