A decision is expected later today (22 October) on whether to suspend public services like schools and buses.
Storm Austen is expected to bring force 10 winds to the Bailiwick overnight on Thursday (22 October) with the potential for force 11 winds in the Channel.
The wind will build up overnight and become storm force by 3am with the worst of the gusts expected at 7am on Friday (23 October).
The States say they are monitoring forecasts but expect that Austen will not be on the magnitude of Storm Goretti in January or Storm Ciaran three years ago.
However, they want islanders to be 'mindful of the weather' and its potential impact.
The States will make a decision later on closing the schools, limiting or ending bus services and rescheduling routine medical appointments
Jersey has already decided to close its schools.
Bin collections in Guernsey tonight are cancelled.
