Crisis meeting over the standard of Guernsey's bus service

The States and Stagecoach will meet today after the Assembly is told the current service has "not been good enough."

For the past two months, since the introduction of new routes, the reliability of Guernsey's bus service has been criticised by users.

That was admitted in the Assembly this morning (21 October) by deputy Adrian Gabriel, whose Environment Committee chose Stagecoach in a competitive tender process two years ago:

"The service has not been good enough in the past few weeks and months, and Stagecoach has accepted that it has fallen short.

"The Committee has been pressing the company every week, and its managing director is meeting us today to set out the action being taken to deliver the service the Island is entitled to expect."

Deputy Gabriel says they will use the contract to hold Stagecoach to its obligations:

"We know people rely on these buses to get to work, school, appointments and family.

"The operator must now turn its commitment into a service that is reliable on the road, not just reassuring to us on paper.

"The Committee will be using all the levers in the contract to ensure that this happens, and happens soon."

Deputy Gabriel also told States members that two new electric buses have arrived on the island and will be in service soon.

The States buy and own assets like the buses, which are then used by the operator.
