An appetite for recycling means islanders are putting out less rubbish, according to the General Services Committee.
From September, people in Alderney will have their household rubbish collected once every two weeks.
The General Services Committee says the trial will last until late October.
It will take in all island homes except properties in Victoria Street, the High Street and Le Huret, which have limited outside space, meaning their collections will continue weekly.
During the trial, extra waste bins will be available at existing island-wide waste and recycling facilities.
It believes that a trial is the best way to test the benefits and disadvantages of the proposal, given that a reduction in refuse pickup frequency may cause concern for some people.
The Committee warns that waste collection and disposal costs have increased significantly over the past two to three years, partly due to inflation, and this may be a way of saving money if it proves successful.
The trial period begins the week of Monday 2 September 2024.
