Victor Hugo retail trail launches in Guernsey

Islanders can explore St Peter Port shops and see where the famous author Victor Hugo went in the 1800s.

Window decals will be displayed in shops around St Peter Port to signal that they have a Victor Hugo connection.

Inside A3 posters will show what the building used to look like, and sell. With text in both English and French.

The retail trail has been set up by the Victor Hugo Centre.

Operations Manager, Laura Harrison, hopes both tourists and locals will enjoy:

"There's a walking route that you can do through the Visit Guernsey app, but if you're just walking through town and you see the sign, it's just a fun little extra to your normal shopping day.

"The Victor Hugo Centre is looking to entertain, inspire and educate people of Guernsey about Victor Hugo and his legacy and his deep connection to the island.

"We're doing that through this retail trail by telling a number of different stories, some of them funny, some of them quite poignant, about Hugo and his time in the island.

"He didn't just sit in Hauteville House writing his famous novels and poetry, he also explored extensively, he shopped, he went to the bank, stayed in some of the hotels here, he got to know people, and it's those sorts of stories that we're celebrating here."

The Victor Hugo Centre, which will occupy the old Tourist Information Centre on the North Esplanade, has been fundraising for years.
