Successful start to Guernsey Ports renewable heating oil conversion

The Crown Pier marina facilities began running on renewable heating oil in April, ahead of the busy summer season.

Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) is being used to power the showers and heating in the changing rooms on the Crown Pier in St Peter Port.

The facilities are used by visiting boat crews and the States say the fuel reduces carbon emissions by 90%.

HVO is processed and purified vegetable oil from the catering industry and replaces the kerosene used in traditional boilers, which were modified to run on the new fuel.

The States say HVO has the benefit of being odourless with reduced carbon monoxide, particulate and NOx emissions so this will improve air quality in the area.

Kieran Higgs is the head of port operations and says it is a step on the journey to a greener future:

"About 50% of Guernsey Ports' carbon emissions across the harbour and the airport are from fossil fuels, so we were really keen to try and reduce that and this was the first of a rolling programme to convert to HVO wherever we can.

"Guernsey Ports is responsible for a lot of infrastructure at the airport and at the harbour so we're reviewing our fleet of vehicles and looking at hybrid options when we do come to replacement."
