Plan to reduce violence against women and girls in Guernsey and Alderney

A new strategy is being developed which aims to protect women and girls in Guernsey and Alderney from violence.

The Home Affairs Committee says it will focus on prevention through education and supporting victims.

The lead for the committee's work is Deputy Munazza Malik, who wants Guernsey to have a strategy tailored to the island's needs.

"We are going to look at all our local data and once that data is collated across different parts of the criminal justice system, that will form the basis of our very own policy and development."

While there is already a Domestic Abuse Law in Guernsey, the aim is to further complement legislation with the proposed Protection from Harm (Bailiwick of Guernsey) Law, 2026.

This introduces new offences including strangulation, stalking, spiking and female genital mutilation.

Deputy Malik says this will benefit the entire community:

"As women, we understand that as a group we are disproportionately affected as compared to men and boys; the statistics are there (to show this)

"And that's why we need to make sure that everyone in our community feels safe, and that's the work we are doing to make it safer for everyone."
