A new supermarket price comparison website for Guernsey has found that M&S is generally the cheapest for everyday essentials.
SuperSavvySavers have begun publishing monthly price comparisons.
The Bailiwick bargain hunting initiative, launched by Kat Gillespie and Sarah de Carteret, compared the prices of 25 everyday essentials such as bread, eggs and rice at six local outlets.
As of June 2024, they found M&S the cheapest at £34.30 and Iceland the most expensive at £41.95 - a £7.65 difference.
Kat has some theories on what influences this:
"Some supermarkets, like M&S, bring their prices down deliberately on essentials to get people in their store, and then hope that they can entice them to buy a more premium product while they are there.
"Iceland didn't stand a chance to be honest. Their own brand products are in the freezers and aren't your everyday essentials.
"Down the line we are looking to do different comparisons of Free-From products, frozen products and kids lunch box items and I expect they might fare better in those lists."
She hopes islanders will use their findings as a guide:
"People aren’t particularly going to be buying all 25 of these items, so they can do their own comparison now using the list.
"If there are five items they usually buy, then they can look and see which shop would be cheapest for them."
The supermarket price comparison will be updated monthly on the SuperSavvySavers website.
