Guernsey's Economic Development President, Deputy Sasha Kazantseva-Miller, believes the speed at which Blue Islands collapsed was a 'surprise' and a 'shock'.
It comes as Guernsey announces that it will require a license for airlines to operate the Guernsey-Jersey service, as it plans to make it a lifeline route, to protect it.
Airlines looking to operate the route will need to have acquired a licence by mid-January.
Deputy Kazantseva-Miller explains why:
"We have really felt how vulnerable our inter-island travel has been, and how unsatisfactory the reduction in connectivity has been.
"Looking at those circumstances, we have carefully considered that this constitutes a really important route for our community."
Both Aurigny and Loganair have stepped in on the Jersey-Guernsey route since the loss of Blue Islands on 14 November 2025.
When Island FM asked the politician whether the government would like to see competition on the route from multiple airlines, she told us that two operators had been granted licences for the same route in the past.
"The designation doesn't mean there cannot be competition, but there is an extra step that an operator who would like to operate a route has to apply [for], and it will be determined by the Travel Licensing Authority whether a licence should be granted."

The President of the Economic Development Committee continues:
"I cannot comment for the Government of Jersey, but it is very clear that they have been working with Loganair for a while on contingency plans, which included our essential routes.
"As far as I understand, we had not been notified about the workings of the Government of Jersey, so it all came as a surprise and as a shock.
"My priority and the priority for my Committee and my Government is what is in the best interest of our community and economy, and I think those are the kind of considerations we are going to have to make for the Bailiwick."
Jersey's Economic Development Minister, Kirsten Morel, has been approached for comment.
