“Our big target was 70% by 2030, now we’re forecasting reaching almost 65% this year”
Following implementation of the recycling-collection system this time last year, Guernsey has seen a significant decrease in black-bag waste.
In the first six months of the year 2,125 tonnes of black-bag waste was collected – less than half of the 5,100 tonnes collected during the same period in 2018.
Sarah Robinson, Operations managers at Guernsey Waste, told Island FM targets are being met ahead of schedule.
“We were ambitious and we did set ourselves some targets, our big target was 70% by 2030, now we’re forecasting reaching almost 65% this year – which is way ahead of schedule”.
Robinson also alluded to household figures, which prove that since reforms were made to the waste collection process, house-hold recyclable items not being recycled has dropped.
“Back in 2015 about 15% of (the contents of) black-bags were recyclable, this year that has gone down to about 8%”.
