Guernsey hedge veg owners inaugural meeting

The Hedge Veg Alliance meet for the first time to discuss how to promote and future proof an island favourite.

The Guernsey Hedge Veg Alliance was formed by James Manger earlier this summer, after the money and contents of one of his stalls were taken.

He posted about it on social media and quickly realised that he was not alone, with some former stallholders giving up after such thefts.

The Hedge Veg Alliance is an attempt to bring together the people behind the lane-side stalls and look at ways that they can support each other and expand.

James says he would like to see places where a larger collection of hedge veg boxes are grouped together to offer shoppers a destination for local produce.

He also believes that out of town places like garages could host hedge veg stalls.

Although not unique to Guernsey, the honesty boxes offer all sorts of food, from freshly baked bread and cakes to free cooking apples, and, of course, fresh vegetables in season.
