Fog causes major disruption at Guernsey Airport

All six Aurigny aircraft are stuck in the UK after flying was suspended because of low visibility.

Guernsey Ports say emergency contingencies were put in place yesterday (3 September) to deal with the number of passengers stranded in the island because of fog.

The Airport website shows no flights got in after mid-morning on Thursday, and flying was suspended completely in the afternoon.

All six of Aurigny's ATRs had left Guernsey, but on the return trip, after circling overhead waiting for a gap in visibility, the planes had to divert to UK airports, meaning they are out of position this morning.

Early September is peak tourist season in Guernsey and Ports, Visit Guernsey, Aurigny and BA worked to arrange accommodation where possible for stranded passengers.

Airport director Richard Thomasson admits it is frustrating for passengers:

"We would like to thank them for their patience and understanding and teams across the States of Guernsey, airlines and partner agencies are working closely together to support those affected, secure accommodation where required, and restore services as quickly as possible."

There are delays this morning (4 September) and departing passengers are asked to keep a check on the status of their flight, arrive early and be aware the Airport will be busy.
