Recovery in ferry passenger travel on Jersey routes

DFDS says bookings on its Jersey routes for this summer are up 25%.

The ferry firm is also reporting increased travel during May - up by a fifth.

A strong May, with 16,000 people travelling during half -term, has boosted DFDS' passenger figures.

The biggest increase was on the St Malo route, up 26%, with Poole up 11% and very small growth (4%) on the Portsmouth route.

DFDS says summer bookings are up by a quarter on last year, and that nearly 200,000 passengers are booked to travel this year.

It is against a backdrop of ferry passengers falling more than a quarter last year, according to Ports of Jersey data.

The firm is citing 'strong demand for day trips' to and from France, and its 'popular 24-hour fare' which allows people to stay overnight for the same price as a day-return.

Chris Parker, Route Director for DFDS in Jersey, said:

"It has been encouraging to see strong demand across all our routes as we move into the summer season.

"We have worked hard to provide customers with greater choice and flexibility, particularly on our French services, and it is pleasing to see more islanders and visitors taking advantage of those opportunities.

"Forward bookings for the summer remain very positive and we look forward to welcoming more passengers on board over the coming months."
