Invite to 'Sponsor a Brave Bear' for families facing off-island treatment

A new campaign has been launched to strengthen support for Jersey families facing off-island treatment journeys.

Since 2018, Family First has raised £542,000 to support 384 families with the additional costs and pressures associated with off-island treatment.

However, with demand for its services growing, the charity is looking to build a stronger and more sustainable supporter base to help ensure more families can access support in the future.

The charity's 'Brave Bear' has become a symbol of comfort, reassurance, and hope for families as they navigate some of their most difficult moments.

Every child supported by Family First receives one to accompany them on their treatment journey, with siblings also receiving one to help maintain a sense of connection when families are apart.

Islanders are now being invited to 'Sponsor a Brave Bear' to help more families receive the support they need.

Cheryl Dolbel, CEO of Family First, said:

"When a child needs treatment off-island, life can change overnight. Families suddenly find themselves balancing hospital appointments, travel arrangements, additional costs and time away from loved ones, all while trying to focus on what matters most: their child.

"Family First exists to make that journey feel a little less overwhelming. We provide emotional, practical and financial support, and we stay alongside families throughout what can be an incredibly challenging time.

"The Brave Bear represents so much more than a teddy. For many children, it becomes a familiar companion through hospital appointments, treatment and time away from home. It represents comfort, reassurance and a reminder that someone is there for them. We have given out 127 bears so far this year to children needing treatment and their siblings.

"By sponsoring a Brave Bear or becoming a regular supporter, islanders can help ensure future families receive that same support, understanding and care when they need it most."

Among those backing the campaign is Rosie Hargreaves, 11, who has today started her 'Journey of Hope' to raise money for the charity.

"I'm fundraising because I want other families facing similar challenges to receive the same support, we did. Family First provides more than practical help, it provides reassurance, understanding and a reminder that you're not facing things alone.

"If sharing our story encourages just one more person to support the charity, then it will be worth it."

The campaign encourages islanders to 'Sponsor a Brave Bear' through regular giving, making a one-off donation, taking on a fundraising challenge, or helping to share the charity's message.
