Prison Coffee Shop Next On The Cards

Prisoners at HMP La Moye could soon be serving you coffee in a cafe at the jail.

The next phase of ongoing modernisation work includes plans for an 'outworkers unit'.

Inmates are being trained as baristas as part of efforts to prepare them for their release.

Prison Governor Susie Richardson says it is a major part of plans to prepare inmates for life on the outside.

"We're running a hospitality academy here at the prison. We are training prisoners as barista. We want them to be able to come out and work in that coffee shop, to serve the community and the tourist industry and meet with potential employers, secure employment ready for release and prove themselves in a public-facing hospitality role."

She has been telling Channel 103 more about the penultimate phase of the redevelopment of La Moye Prison.

"We have got high aspirations for the standard of that coffee shop, to make it somewhere that people really want to come to in Jersey - with that unique selling point of it being attached to a prison, and with artefacts from the original Newgate prison and also from the wings that are about to be demolished here as well.

It should be a really interesting space."

Money for work on the prison upgrade has come from criminal compensation from proceeds of crime, which is invested into the criminal justice system.

Parts of the prison have been renamed this week.
