More than 300 young people have received the first dose of a meningitis B vaccine in Jersey so far.
Clinics began earlier following a series of recent outbreaks in England - the most serious being in Kent earlier this year, where two teenagers died.
It's being offered to:
- Year 13 students (born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008)
- Young people born on or after 21 July 2001 and starting as university undergraduates for the first time in autumn 2026
- Young people born on or after 21 July 2001 who will be liviBng in further education accommodation, or halls of residence, for the first time in autumn 2026
Any students that haven't been able to go to a walk-in clinic, can still arrange a vaccine by calling the Immunisation Team on 01534 443741 or emailing immunisationteam@health.gov.je.
No booking is needed, but photo ID is required to confirm date of birth. Fresher students need to bring a letter received from university.
In a statement, Public Health Jersey said:
"Two doses of MenB vaccine are essential for protection. The second dose should be given at least 28 days after the first, and it then takes a further 2 weeks for the body to build a good level of immunity. If you are unable to get both doses in Jersey and are due to attend university in the UK, you will be able to receive all or your remaining doses once you arrive at university.
"Public Health Jersey recommends that all students and young adults check that they are up to date with all routinely recommended vaccinations. Meningitis has many causes. If an individual is not eligible for the MenB vaccine, they should still make sure they are up to date with the MMR and MenACWY vaccines, which help protect against other causes of meningitis. It is also important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of meningococcal disease."
