Highlands College has announced the appointment of Lance Chatfield as its new Principal, who will take over the role in September 2026.
Lance originally trained as an electrical engineer and transitioned into education 21 years ago, later completing an Executive MBA.
He has been recognised nationally for his contributions to skills development, receiving the Queen’s Anniversary Prize at Buckingham Palace for outstanding work in maritime education.
Lance has experience in shaping modern curricula, including teaching BSc Civil Engineering and developing specialist programmes such as the UK’s only foundation degree in Marine Autonomy.
Highlands College says he brings 'a strong background in industry and business leadership.'
As he prepares to take up his new role, Lance said he's honoured to join the college at such an exciting time:
"The college plays a vital role in shaping opportunity, supporting learners of all backgrounds and strengthening the island’s economy.
I am particularly looking forward to working with students, staff and partners to build on the college’s strong foundations, expand technical and professional pathways, and continue to create an inclusive environment where everyone can succeed."
He will succeed Principal Jo Terry-Marchant, who is stepping down on 10 July after a 35-year career in education, with 21 years at Highlands.
Jo said:
“It has been a privilege to serve as Principal of Highlands College and to work alongside such committed staff and talented students. I am delighted to welcome Lance to the role.
"His experience, energy and vision make him an excellent choice to lead the college into its next chapter, and I wish him every success."
