A rare sketchbook donated to the Société Jersiaise is provides a unique window into Jersey in the 19th Century.
The sketchbook, containing 80 beautifully executed drawings and watercolours of Jersey landscapes, was recently donated to The Lord Coutanche Library, amongst other books and sketchbooks.
Measuring 27 cm by 18 cm, the sketchbook is believed to date from the mid to late nineteenth century and offers a fascinating glimpse of the Island as it appeared then.
Its pages capture Jersey's coastline, countryside, rural buildings and landscape with skill and attention to detail.
Familiar locations are depicted through the eyes of a nineteenth-century observer, providing valuable insights into Jersey's changing landscape and built heritage.
An inscription inside the cover reads: “W. H. Howes. Τεχνίτης.”
The Greek word technítēs, meaning “craftsman”, “artisan” or “artist”, offers an intriguing clue to the identity of the sketchbook's owner or creator.
While little is currently known about W. H. Howes, the quality and scope of the work suggest that the creator was a talented and meticulous artist with a keen interest in recording Jersey's landscapes and architecture.

"This sketchbook is both an exceptional work of art and an invaluable historical record of nineteenth-century Jersey.
"The drawings provide a fascinating glimpse of landscapes, buildings and places that Islanders still recognise today, while also revealing how parts of the Island have changed over time.
"Collections such as this enrich our understanding of Jersey's past and help preserve an important visual record of the Island for future generations."
