The Battle of Flowers' first parade gathered thousands in town this afternoon.

The parade, which was free this year, gathered thousands of islanders and holidaymakers.

A scaled-down version of the celebration was needed, keeping the tradition alive after fears this year's event would be cancelled completely.

The parade circled through town, so it required smaller floats, but designers refused to let their imaginations be dimmed by size requirements.

The evening parade will do the same on Saturday evening (9 August) and end with a firework finale.
