People living with dementia in Jersey are being given free, wearable QR codes.
The MiCode packs, which come with a lifetime subscription, are available through Dementia Jersey supported by a government-backed CareTech grant.
The code can be scanned to display an emergency contact number if a person becomes disoriented or is unable to communicate in an emergency.
Dementia Jersey says the scheme addresses a concern that many people quietly live with - what happens if someone becomes disoriented, unwell, or unable to communicate, and can’t explain what’s happening when they need help most?
The QR code can be carried on a keyring, kept in a wallet or worn as a sticker.

If it is scanned by emergency services, a first responder or member of the public, it will show a a name and emergency contact number so that the right person can be contacted without delay.
Additional medical information can then be accessed securely using a PIN, either shared by the emergency contact or accessed directly by emergency services.
Dr Dawn Harper, best known for her long running role on Embarrassing Bodies, has backed the Jersey launch. Her own father is living with dementia and using MiCode.
"Having seen this both professionally and personally, I know how frightening it can be when someone you love is unable to explain who they are or what they need.
"Dementia can take away words, but it shouldn’t take away a person’s safety or dignity.
"Something as simple as a QR code can make a real difference in those critical moments, helping others respond with understanding and compassion.
"It’s a small intervention that can prevent situations from escalating and gives families confidence that their loved one won’t be left struggling to cope alone.”
Claudine Snape, CEO of Dementia Jersey, said:
"Bringing MiCode to Jersey is about giving people something simple they can put in place now that offers real reassurance. It’s quick to set up, easy to carry, and could make a meaningful difference when it matters most.”
