Deputy Philip Ozouf suspended from the States Assembly

Deputy Philip Ozouf has been suspended from the States Assembly for 28 days.

The politician has been suspended without pay with immediate effect, after 29 States Members voted in favour, 17 against, and three abstained.

The Privileges and Procedures Committee brought the proposition to sanction the St Saviour representative after four members of the public filed complaints about him.

The complaints highlighted that he may have breached the States Members' Code of Conduct by failing to meet the standards of leadership, integrity, and accountability expected of those in public office.

It follows the Deputy's court appearance earlier this year, charged with motoring offences - including speeding - and his failure to attend three parish hall enquiries.

A police officer stopped Deputy Ozouf on 2 November 2024 and was found to be driving at 31 mph on a 15 mph road in St Helier, without displaying a valid insurance disc.

The St Saviour representative was fined £575 in the Magistrate's Court.

The Standards Commissioner investigated his conduct and determined that Deputy Ozouf had breached the States Members’ Code of Conduct.

Yesterday in the Assembly, Deputy Ozouf publicly apologised for a second time, explaining that he had been affected personal challenges including the sudden death of his husband in 2023, and since being diagnosed as having ADHD.

Some of his colleagues - including Deputy Sir Philip Bailhache, said they believed the suspension was unfair and disproportionate.

Separately, Deputy Ozouf is due to appear in the Royal Court for immigration offences on 3 October 2025.

The politician is accused of five offences relating to the employment of Rwandan nationals at his laundrette, My Eco Laundry, between 2021 and 2023.
