Jersey Fire and Rescue is reminding us not to use the kitchen hob as a worktop following a fire at a block of flats in St Helier.
Edinburgh House on Green Street was evacuated on Monday (1 December) after a mum and her two young children came home to a smoke logged flat.
A bag of shopping was smouldering on top of the cooker.
The family left the property and called 999.
Four fire engines and an aerial ladder platform were sent to the scene at around 12.40pm and the incident was quickly brought under control.
The family was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.
JFRS said: "We are reminding people to avoid cluttering up their kitchen worktops and not to use the hob as an extension of the work area.
"It is very easy, as in this case, to accidentally knock on the hob ring and accidentally set alight to items on or nearby the cooker.
It is also important to have a working smoke alarm to provide early warning and give you plenty time to safely leave your home."
