No increase in domestic abuse reports in Jersey during World Cup

Jersey Police say the number of reported domestic abuse incidents made during the World Cup is encouraging.

There was serious concern that existing domestic abuse would escalate during the World Cup, as UK studies showed this happens when England won or lost.

But in Jersey, reports are down on the same period last year.

139 incidents were reported in Jersey throughout the tournament, compared to 141 during the same period in 2025.

Acting Detective Chief Inspector, Aiden Quenault, says while any incident is one too many, it's encouraging they didn't see the increase that's often associated with events of this nature:

"The figures suggest that raising awareness, maintaining a strong safeguarding focus and working closely with our partners can make a positive difference.

"As part of our ongoing response to domestic abuse, we work closely with partner agencies on a daily basis to review incidents, assess risk, identify safeguarding opportunities and ensure victims can access the support they need.

“We know that domestic abuse often goes unreported, so while these figures are encouraging, they only tell part of the story. We want anyone experiencing abuse to know that support is available, and that they will be listened to and taken seriously.
