Quay FM's Tim Butler killed in car crash in Egypt

Tim Butler, the boss of Alderney radio station Quay FM, died in a car crash on the way to catch a flight home from a holiday in Egypt.

Mr Butler, who is in his fifties, was with his partner Jill when the car they were travelling in was involved in a collision.

They were both in the backseat of the vehicle.

She was injured but is understood to be recovering.

A statement from Quay FM, received earlier today (26 March), confirms the tragic news:

"It is with great sorrow that today we have to bring you the news that QUAY-FM 107.1's station manager, Tim Butler and his partner Jill Benfield were in a car accident in Egypt, on their way to the airport at the end of their holiday.

"Sadly, Tim took the brunt of the impact and he passed away late last night.

"Jill is okay, badly bruised and shaken and she is being assisted by the British consul, and hopefully will be home in the next few days."

Tim Butler was involved with Quay FM, Alderney's first community radio station, since its inception in 2000. Latterly, he became station manager and presented its breakfast show.

Quay FM began as a Restricted Service Licence station but was later granted a full licence by Ofcom and has permanent studios at Braye Harbour.

Tim Butler was known to many at Island FM and Channel 103. James Keen, Managing Director for both stations, said staff were shocked to hear of the news

“Tim was a good friend of our stations and in particular was vital in maintaining our DAB digital radio transmitter in Alderney. He was always a pleasure to deal with and a committed radio enthusiast.

“Our thoughts are with Tim’s family, friends and the entire Quay FM team," he said.
