All islanders are now considered organ donors, unless they've specifically registered against it.
Guernsey previously had an opt-in organ donor scheme, where individuals had to register their decision to donate their organs when they died.
However, in June 2020 the States decided to change this system.
Now, as of 1 January 2023, those opposed to organ donation will have to express their preference instead - otherwise known as an "opt-out" model.
It means there is there is now a legal presumption that everyone else is in favour of organ donation. This is designed to make more healthy organs available to those that need them.
Families will always be contacted for consultation before any action is taken.
The change doesn't apply to children, people without the mental capacity to make decisions for themselves, or those who haven't been living in the island in the year leading up to their death.
The system has been in place in Jersey since 2019 and since 2020 in England.
Given the change, the States is urging people to discuss their wishes with their family and friends.
