Hot, hot, hot, Bank Holiday weekend ahead!

We're set for a sizzling Bank Holiday weekend and start to the school half-term holidays....

Temperatures in the Channel Islands are rising as the long weekend approaches.

We're forecast highs of 28°C in Jersey on Friday (22 May) and of 26°C in Guernsey.

Sustained high temperatures could break May records in Jersey, with a current prediction that it will reach 30°C on Sunday.

Dave Rigby, a senior meteorologist at Jersey Met, told us:

"It's unusual as well isn't it - for a Bank Holiday! Most people seem to think that they don't often get the good weather to go with it.

"It is looking settled, with lots of sunshine around through the course of the weekend."

The record for May (for Jersey) goes back to 2003 when it reached 28.9°C on 30 May.

As things stand, it is set to stay hot for the start of half-term, with temperatures remaining in the high 20s into Tuesday (26 May).

Public Health advice in hot weather:

Extreme heat can cause heat exhaustion, heatstroke and dehydration. Older people and children are particularly at risk.

There are lots of ways you can keep cool and reduce the risks:

  • stock up on food and drink supplies so you don't have to go out into the heat everyday
  • avoid going outside during the hottest time of day 11am to 3pm
  • leave strenuous activities like gardening or DIY for later on in the day when it is cooler
  • take cold baths and showers
  • drink plenty of fluids but avoid coffee and alcohol
  • provide shade for babies with parasols
  • freeze ice lollies for children
  • keep your home cool by closing curtains, opening windows and using fans
  • when you go out wear a sun hat and loose light clothing, try to stay in the shade and carry water with you
