Guernsey charity sees more 'in work' families requesting help

Help a Guernsey Child says - after 25 years - demand for its support and the cost of living are rising.

Help a Guernsey Child launched in 2001.

For 25 years, it has used referrals from social workers, teachers and doctors to help thousands of children.

£1.2 million has been spent on essentials like clothes, bedding and furniture that families could not afford.

Application Administrator and Director Alex Jenner says demand is rising with the cost of living.

"Typical Guernsey people, we're quite stubborn, aren't we? And we don't want to ask for help.

"But it is now at that critical point where we are seeing more and more families saying 'actually, I really cannot do this anymore. I really do need a little bit of help.'

"A little tiny bit of help from us can make the world of difference for a child in Guernsey.

"You know, a stair gate is less than £40. But that kind of thing, some people just can't afford it.

"It could be a £20 trip to Lihou Island, and we don't want that one child sitting in the corner at school on their own.

"Everyone says it's just people that are on benefits (that we help) - it's not.

"We have a lot of families who are working, but they just quite can't make that big, large one-off payment that they need for a washing machine."
