Two women sentenced for £21,000 cocaine smuggling attempt

Two women have been sentenced for attempting to import cocaine into the island, with a street value of £21,000, to settle a drug debt.

Two women, Stephanie Dean, 42 and Jaye Henry, 28, from the UK, have been sentenced for attempting to smuggle £21,000 worth of cocaine into the island.

They arrived in April on the Stena Vinga from Portsmouth.

During a search of their baggage, several swabs were taken, giving positive indications for cocaine. Both women admitted to cocaine use the previous weekend.

Jersey Customs and Immigration Service Officers became suspicious that the women were importing drugs internally, and they were subsequently arrested.

Dean told officers, "I have to come clean; I have got something on me", and later produced a condom-wrapped package containing 83.74 grams of cocaine with a purity of 84%.

During the interview, Dean said she was unaware what the package contained, thinking it was cannabis, but that she agreed to import the drugs into Jersey to clear her drug debt, of between £800 and £900, which she owed to a man.

Henry was found not to be carrying any drugs after refusing the package.

She said that Dean was getting paid £2,000 to import the drugs and that she (Henry) would receive money for travelling with her.

Dean was sentenced to two years and six months’ imprisonment, and Henry was given a 384-hour community service order.
