'Slowmance' on the cards for Jemma the sloth away from Jersey Zoo

Jemma the sloth

Jemma is moving from Jersey Zoo to join Santos, a male sloth, in the UK in the hopes they will start breeding.

The female sloth, who was born at Durrell, will be leaving for Marwell Zoo in Hampshire.

She has been paired with Santos, after they were deemed a good match by the European Breeding co-ordinator.

Islanders can see Jemma in the Cloud Forest before she leaves on 24 March.

When Jemma was born in January last year, it was hoped that she would go on to breed, to help increase the captive population of Linne's Two-toed Sloth.

Jemma is the last sloth at Jersey Zoo, after both of her parents died last year.

It is suspected that Terry, her mother, died after she choked on her food in October, whilst her mate Rio died earlier in the year after a decline in health.
