More Support For Families With Disabled Children

A new system to offer more targeted and specialist support for disabled children is being proposed.

The States has launched a consultation on how it supports families with children who have disabilities.

It’s after many parents called for the ‘Short Breaks’ service to offer more choice for their children – including more group activities and more support in the school holidays.

Children’s Minister, Senator Sam Mézec, says it’s important the government gets things right for children and their families:

“We believe that the families who use our services should be involved in designing them to make sure that the services are suitable and fit for purpose.”

Plans put forward are for a three-tier system, including ‘universal services’ that are open to everyone like youth groups, nurseries and sports clubs. There’ll be more targeted support for children with disabilities and specialist support for those most in need.

It would replace the current two levels of support on offer to eligible families, where at least 198 hours of respite is given each year.
