Listed Victorian townhouse to be demolished for seven-storey office block on Esplanade

Planning permission has been granted for a seven-storey office building on the Esplanade, in the place of a Grade 3 listed Victorian townhouse.

An inspector noted that there was no 'realistic prospect' of retaining or restoring the heritage building within the office scheme.

Permission for a separate, six-storey block on the same site was granted last year. The original plan for an additional seven-storey development was rejected, but a challenge to that ruling was successful.

One of the main issues considered by a planning inspector was the impact of the building on the appearance of the area.

But David Hainsworth concluded that it was appropriate, with its place amongst other offices there.

The new development will house offices on 19-21 Esplanade and 34 Commercial Street.

The ground floor will also house a takeaway coffee shop.
