Limited access to Gorey Pier for storm damage assessments

The work is investigating damage to the pier from Storm Ciaran, and what repairs are needed.

Planning permission has been granted to carry out intrusive site investigations on Gorey Pier to inform repair work. They will last for 4-6 weeks.

Intrusive site investigations on Gorey Pier mean there will be intermittent access restrictions for vehicles, parking bays and the public.

The work will begin today (27 May) and last between four to six weeks, with efforts made to minimise disruptions during the height of the summer season.

The landing stage of the pier has been closed to the public since October 2023, after deterioration was found.

UK company Terra Firma, which is undertaking the specialist work, will be opening a series of trial pits and boreholes on the pier arm, pier head and base of the wall on the harbour side.

The engineers are scheduling the digs for low tide, to reduce the risk of seawater filling the holes through the pier.

No work will be undertaken along the bulwarks where the restaurants and residences are.

Ande Vibert, Ports of Jersey's Public Service Obligations Manager, told Channel 103 that they need to wait for planning permission for the more intrusive work, as the pier is Grade 1 listed:

"The work that we need to undertake is to validate the data that we have collated from previous surveys. These were done above the ground and were surface, we didn't open anything up.

"We now need to go further to work out exactly what processes we would need to undertake to carry out the physical main works.

"We have worked very closely, and will continue to work very closely with the government's planning and heritage departments. They have been extremely helpful - they understand how important it is that these structures absolutely remain in place.

"We have also been working very closely with the user groups and tenants all around Gorey. They are aware of the works that are necessary."
