500 Jersey students sing alongside West End stars

'Jersey Sings Across the Bay' is a performance of 500 children from 14 schools accompanied by leading West End singers

One of Jersey's largest choir performances returns tomorrow (26 June) at 1 pm at the Methodist Centre in St Helier.

The location has changed from the beach amphitheatre near Jardins De Le Mer due to forecasted rain.

500 young singers from 14 primary and secondary schools, including Le Quennevais and Mont a L’Abbe will perform a 50-minute concert with a setlist ranging from rock to pop to classical .

'Jersey Sings Across the Bay' is all accompanied by the Jersey Sings Band.

They have worked with island charity Music in Action as well as internationally esteemed singer and choir instructor Alexander L’Estrange who has led massed choir workshops across the UK and in America.

Singing alongside them are the star soloists from the West End musical ‘Wicked’, including Laura Pick, who plays Elphaba and Oliver Tompsett.

Christina Tedders from Music in Action is a musician and actress, and has been leading the workshops:

"It's anything but a traditional choir performance; it's going to be full of energy and pizazz.

"In the workshops, some children are bouncing off the walls and full of energy, and others are lower in confidence. By the end, I'm aiming for them to have found that connection, let go of that self-consciousness, and that they're enjoying singing it.

"We talk about what the lyrics mean and how that can connect to their lives. By doing that you you naturally affect the way the song is sung and performed."

Schools have been preparing for the performance since the start of the year through workshops and resources provided by Music in Action.
