The Channel Islands' largest rooftop solar array is set to be installed at a Trinity potato farm.
Jersey Electricity has agreed with the Jersey Royal Company to install panels on the roof of Peacock Farm in Trinity.
The system will cover 8000 square metres of roof space and is expected to generate 935,000 units of electricity annually.
That is enough to power 128 all-electric homes each year for at least the next 25 years. The power will be returned to the grid.
JE will lease the roof of the farm from Jersey Royal Company, which is part of the Albert Bartlett Group
JE’s chief executive Chris Ambler said, “After a successful initial project, it is great to be partnering with Albert Bartlett on this second array which will be the largest in the Channel Islands by nearly 40%.
An initial project with Albert Bartlett at the potato processing plant on Trinity Hill is said to have generated 850,000 kWh units of electricity since 2023.
Work on the Peacock Farm solar installation, which will be JE’s eleventh large-scale commercial rooftop array, is scheduled to start in the new year.
Panels on the airport cargo shed and St Clement Parish Hall ae due to start generating power before the end of the year.
JE has set the ambition to power 5,000 homes with locally-generated solar power by 2030.
It says, with two ground-mount solar sites due to be commissioned in the New Year, it will be nearly 40% towards its goal.
