Jersey could be back in rugby national leagues

A win this weekend could see Jersey RFC back in the national rugby leagues.

Jersey RFC remain undefeated this season, with only five matches left, and if they keep the streak going, the island could be back in the rugby national leagues.

The team are 17 points clear at the top of the table and could clinch the Regional One South Central title by beating bottom side Hammersmith and Fulham in Saturday's match in St Peter..

In October 2023, the sport was dealt a blow when politicians voted against a publicly-funded bailout, forcing the Championship-winning Jersey Reds into liquidation.

It meant the amateur Jersey RFC side was left as the island's main team for the sport.

Director of Rugby, Myles Landick says they are now on the cusp of taking Jersey back into the position it was with the Reds with back-to-back promotions; albeit in the lower tiers of English rugby union.

"It's been a pretty amazing run.  A huge amount of credit has to go to the playing group; they've done exceptionally well.

"We've learnt so much about ourselves, the opposition, and the league.

"There is a potential promotion this weekend if a couple of results go our way."

JRFC's uplift to the level four, and the National Leagues, would be the third promotion in four seasons for the club.

"If we don't get it this weekend, then we've got to go to a really tough Bracknell side and hope to get a win there."
