In a landmark case, a 42 year old Jersey care worker has been jailed for 12 months for the 'appalling' mistreatment of a vulnerable disabled teenager.
Joana Da Mata Viana Martins mocked her 18-year-old victim, shouted in her face and removed and withheld her wheelchair.
The Royal Court sentenced her for two counts of ill-treatment and wilful neglect.
It is the first conviction under the Capacity and Self-Determination Law, brought in to protect vulnerable members of society.
Police described the charges as 'deeply concerning behaviour'.
Details of the victim's mistreatment emerged when Safeguarding Adults Team received a referral on 27 September 2022.
Detective Sergeant Martin Davies called the crime appalling.
"The States of Jersey Police remain committed to protecting the rights and dignity of all individuals, especially the most vulnerable members of our community. This conviction serves as a testament to our unwavering dedication to upholding the law and ensuring that justice is served."
