Grouville to introduce more green lanes alongside new red pavement

Following its red-paint pavements, more roads in Grouville will become become green lanes to improve pedestrian safety.

Scarlet stripes to symbolise a sidewalk appeared along a lane by the school during the half-term holidays.

The bright colour has divided opinion, with some criticising the choice in a countryside setting.  Others have welcomed the action being taken to prevent road accidents.

It's hideous and will not make any difference to the safety of the road

Fantastic that the children’s and school’s voices have been heard and acted on

Thank you, it was definitely needed and very much appreciated

Absolute disgrace

Parish Constable Mark Labey told Channel 103 he picked the red paint deliberately:

"It had to scream 'danger'."

He said - after three deaths on parish roads since he became Constable - he would have felt 'personally responsible' if anyone had been injured or worse on the lane.

"Rue de la Hayes du Puits has a few blind spots, especially in the colder months when there is less daylight.

"Most cars now are wider and larger.

"Pick up and drop off time around Grouville School is quite dangerous.

Yes, it's bold. Yes, it's bright, but isn't that the point?"

In a message to parishioners yesterday (2 June) he wrote

"There is criticism of the colour but red stands out in what can be a shaded lane.  Whilst being bright at the moment, it will fade in time.

This is why a bright colour was chosen, other colour options would not stand out enough in the winter months and future years."

Constable Labey tells us more road safety measures will follow, with the speed limit being lowered on a number of roads, especially south of Grouville school, as well as speed restrictions near the parish hall.

"We have a big scheme to unroll, and we've been waiting for this since October 2022."

"We've had three road deaths in Grouville, all devastating and all tragic, since I became Constable, and we just don't want to have any more injuries or worse happening in our parish."
