Free heart health checks for islanders

Jersey’s Cardiology Team is hosting free heart health checks as part of Heart Failure Awareness Week.

Islanders can get a blood pressure and heart rate check at:

  • General Hospital Outpatients' Department on Wednesday 29 April, between 10 am and 2 pm.
  • Jersey Central Market, on Friday 1 May, between 10 am and 2 pm.

Last year, the team saw 179 islanders at a series of pop-ups, helping to support early identification of symptoms and preventative care.

Health and Care Jersey says that heart failure affects more than 2,000 people in Jersey and, although it is often preventable, it can go unnoticed until it's too late.

Sinead O'Driscoll, Heart Failure Advanced Practitioner, told Channel 103.

"We suspect that many (people) are undiagnosed as it is often missed and undiagnosed.  This is about making people aware of the signs and symptoms of heart failure.

"We will be doing blood pressure checks and heart rhythm checks, and offering information.

Key signs and symptoms of heart failure include fighting for breath, feeling fatigued, and fluid retention (swollen legs).

Islanders are encouraged to be active, moderate alcohol consumption, and know their blood pressure and cholesterol numbers.
