Couples able to file joint tax returns if they opt-in

Couples who want to continue filing joint tax returns must opt in by 30 September 2026.

Since the start of this year, everyone has been responsible for their own tax and for submitting their own returns.

But islanders who are married or in a civil partnership may be able to continue joint filing.

They can opt in by:

  • Applying online at gov.je/IndependentTax, or
  • Picking up a form at their local parish hall or at or the Government of Jersey building on Union Street

Couples eligible must:

  • Have filed one tax return as a married couple or civil partnership this year
  • Not be separated or divorced
  • Opt in together, with both partners agreeing to the arrangement
  • Agree to share their tax information with each other and allow both partners to discuss tax matters with Revenue Jersey
  • Nominate one partner to take responsibility for submitting the tax return

They will be taxed independently but will complete one tax return as a couple.
