Children immortalised in new St Helier mural for Liberation 80

80 years later, David King and Dave Le Plongeon revisit a photograph of them celebrating their liberation, now immortalised in a mural on Pitt Street.

The massive mural was unveiled by the Bailiff, Sir Timothy Le Cocq, and the artist, Ben Robertson A.K.A BOKRA World, at 10:30 am on 8 May 2025, in the run up to Liberation 80.

It shows a group of children playing on a German anti-aircraft gun, which would now be the site of Haute Vallee school.

The boy with his arms wrapped around the barrel of the gun is 7-year-old Dave Le Plongeon.

Now 87, he spoke to Channel 103 about being liberated:

"I never thought I'd see [the photo] on the wall!

"I'm a bit older than David, I can remember a bit more [about Liberation] and going down with my mother."

His friend, who was also there, David King, says he does not remember much about the photo and had never seen it before.

"We weren't used to being photographed because cameras weren't allowed in the Occupation, so we had nothing to go by, but it's thanks to Dave's memory, he's reminded us where it was and how we used to play in those days.

"It's been lovely to come down and see the painting and chat to everybody, particularly my old friend David."

The pair are the last surviving islanders from the group in the photo.

At the unveiling was the owner of Jersey War Tunnels, who also announced plans to build a memorial honouring the forced labourers who built German infrastructure and the tunnels during the Occupation.

So far, not much is known about the memorial other than it will be called the Sentinel of Souls and will complement the already existing Garden of Reflection.

A consultation will be done, including asking Jersey artists about their opinions on what should be built.

Lance Trevellyan says they want to create something memorable and respectful.

"We have a garden of remembrance, but this is intended to really bring those souls out of the tunnels and into the sunlight so that we can create something Jersey can be proud of."
