The Channel Islands look set for a third heatwave of 2026, as temperatures climb this week.
It is predicted to reach 31°C in Jersey and 28°C in Guernsey today (Monday 6 July), and stay sunny and hot for at least the next six days.
A heatwave is three or more consecutive days above 28°C.
We have already had two record-breaking spells - the first at the end of May which was the earliest ever recorded locally, and a second in June which was more intense and have us the hottest temperatures ever recorded - 39.3°C in Jersey and 36.4°C in Guernsey on 25 June.
This one is not likely to be as extreme, but could last longer.
Jersey Met's five day forecast shows temperatures potentially peaking on Friday, with more uncomfortable sleeping conditions too. ' Tropical nights' are when it doesn't fall below 20°C, and that is likely by Thursday of this week.

Many schools are allowing pupils to wear PE kit, and have advised parents they are monitoring conditions, particularly for end-of-term events such as sports days and school walks.
In June's heatwave, most schools in Jersey closed early or shut completely due to sweltering classrooms.
The conditions have also prompted public health advice, and requests for people to keep their pets cool, not walk dogs during the hottest part of the day and to leave water out for birds and wildlife.
Last week, Jersey Water and Guernsey Water gave assurances about water reserves despite the prolonged dry weather, but also urged people to use water wisely.
Public Health advice for islanders to best cope with the coming few days of heat is to:
- Cool off indoors during the hottest part of the day (11am - 3pm or later) when the UV is at its strongest
- Leave strenuous activity for early or much later when it is cooler
- Take cool baths and showers
- Drink plenty of water and avoid coffee and alcohol
- Close curtains, open windows for the breeze, and use fans
- Wear a hat and loose light clothing
- Wear sun cream that is in date and with a minimum SPF of 30
