Chamber president announces resignation over donation backlash

The president of Jersey's Chamber of Commerce says he's decided to step down, amid backlash over a personal donation he made 18 months ago.

In a post on LinkedIn, Lee Madden says the donation was made in a private capacity and formally declared.... and it had no bearing on his role with the Jersey Chamber of Commerce.

However, he admits that the timing of it has raised concerns and led to a loss of confidence in his position as President.

Mr Madden said:

"I have not used my role to advocate for any political movement, nor have I promoted any specific retail outcome or market entrant. My focus in office has always been on representing the broad interests of our membership fairly, responsibly, and in good faith.

"However, leadership is not only about the substance of your conduct it is also about the confidence others have in your ability to carry out the role effectively. I recognise that the timing of that declaration has raised concerns and that, particularly within the retail sector, it has led to a loss of confidence in my position as President.

"While I do not accept that my conduct in office has been compromised, I do accept that confidence across all sectors is essential if the Chamber is to lead with credibility, balance, and unity. If my continuing in the role risks becoming a distraction from the Chamber’s wider purpose and the important work it has to do on behalf of Jersey’s business community, then it is right that I step aside.

"This has not been an easy decision, but it is one I have taken after careful reflection and with the best interests of the Chamber in mind.

"The Chamber now needs to move forward with clarity, confidence, and collective focus, and I sincerely hope that my decision helps create the space for that to happen."

Lee Madden has held the position for just over a year. He was vice-president from June 2024 to May 2025.
