Call To Halt Recruitment For Civil Service Boss

An Assistant Minister wants the recruitment process for a permanent States Chief Executive to be halted, and for the current interim boss to remain in charge until after next year's election.

Deputy Kirsten Morel says after three years of turmoil, the government and its public service are experiencing a period of calm and competence - which should not be needlessly disrupted.

The controversial tenure of Charlie Parker officially ended in March and he was replaced by Paul Martin, who was appointed on a fixed 12-month contract.

The Comptroller and Auditor General said the States Employment Board should review the original appointment process for the former Chief Executive as soon as possible and use the findings in its process for appointing a permanent CEO.

Deputy Morel says a new recruitment process should only start when the Comptroller's recommendations are implemented in full.

The St Lawrence politician says there is no doubt the public service is, under its current leadership, operating with a more favourable culture and it is even more important the SEB recognises this and takes the opportunity to maintain it.

He says that will then give the breathing space needed to work on the recommendations ahead of appointing a permanent CEO.
