The Battle of Flowers Association has cancelled the firework finale to this year’s Moonlight Parade because it has been unable to get the necessary license.
It says, despite 'detailed risk assessments and planning' and 'considerable work,'it has been 'unable to reach a position required to secure the necessary licence for the display.'
The decision has also been made also considering the exceptionally dry conditions on the island and the risk of wildfire.
In a post on social media, the Association says:
As an Association, the safety of the public, our exhibitors, volunteers, contractors, and emergency services must always come first. We therefore believe that cancelling the display is the responsible decision.
The fireworks were planned to launch from an offshore vessel in St. Aubin's Bay, and the team reassured islanders earlier in the week that they were safe from fire risk, and would go ahead.
The Moonlight Parade will still go ahead this evening (15 August) beginning at 9.45 pm.
To compensate for the loss of the fireworks, organisers say there will be extra confetti and special effects.
Yesterday's day parade, where The Optimists were once again the big winners, was attended by an estimated 15,000 people.
