Affordable roasts to bring back sitting at the table

"It really bonds you as a family, and who doesn't love roast potatoes with lots of a gravy?"

Two Jersey sisters are hoping their discounted mid-week roasts will bring families back to the dinner table to share a home-cooked meal.

On Wednesdays in May, Karen and Nicky Slatter are doing deliveries of roast chicken dinners for families of four at a reduced rate.

The £5 per head meal, which comes with an apple crumble pudding, aims to make the classic dish affordable and possible for more households.

Karen says they want to bring family mealtimes back to sitting at the dining table, enjoying each other’s company.

"The one lovely thing you can always remember is a family meal with a roast, and who doesn't love roast potatoes with lots of gravy?

"It's a lovely way to download the day when you sit down over a meal. The children can tell you what's happened in their day, and it really bonds you as a family."

National data by a UK supermarket in 2021 suggested only 28% of British families share the same evening meal.

Karen says the response has shown how welcomed the Jersey Family Food Kitchen initiative has been:

"It's all part of our ethos, which is 'family kitchen'.

"If you look at the community, everyone is struggling with money.

"We've been able to use very good ingredients and keep it at £5 a head thanks to our suppliers. We've also had some people donate some potatoes.

"There was an outpouring on social media, people were saying that it was a lovely idea and amazing. We reached our cut off and decided we would do it every Wednesday for the month of May."

The sisters are also planning on doing a similar curry night.

They are supporting a charity called Trauma Research UK and intend to donate some of their takings.
