96% of actions addressing violence against women and girls complete or underway

'Considerable progress' has been made to implement the 77 recommendations that the Taskforce to address violence against women and girls in Jersey, made in 2023.

These were across government, the criminal justice system, health and care, education and support services.

The 77 recommendations amount to 109 separate actions.

Of those, only 4 remain unstarted.

68 are completed, and 37 are in progress - 96% of the total.

In the past year:

New laws have been introduced, including to address harassment and stalking, the creation of new intimate image abuse offences, the insertion of emergency barring orders into the existing law on domestic abuse, and the creation of a standalone offence of strangulation.

A review of the family court system in Jersey in relation to the response and management of cases that involve allegations of domestic abuse.

A review of the criminal justice system in Jersey in relation to the response and management of domestic abuse, rape and other sexual assault cases.

A Toolkit for Schools regarding VAWG education and awareness has been developed.

Minister for Justice and Home Affairs, Deputy Mary Le Hegarat, said: 

“I would urge the next Council of Ministers to continue to maintain a focus on addressing the Taskforce recommendations to ensure that we achieve the long-term changes that are needed.

"In particular, ensuring that our system is appropriately resourced to deliver outcomes for victim survivors will, in my opinion, need to be addressed as a priority.”
