90 international marathon swimmers travel to Jersey

Jersey is hosting the 2025 induction into the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame.

Seven swimmers from across the globe are coming to the island for the Class of 2025's induction, along with 23 former honorees from the USA, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Scotland, Ireland and, of course, Jersey.

In total, a delegation of 91 is expected this week

It is the first time the island has been chosen to host the event.

Jersey's record-breaking long-distance swimmer Sally Minty-Gravett MBE was herself inducted into the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame in 2006, in a ceremony in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Since then, Sally - who in 2022 became the first person to swim the English Channel across six different decades - has travelled to the annual event to celebrate new inductees - including to Los Angeles in 2015 when the Jersey Long Distance Swimming Club was inducted, and a year later when her late husband Charlie.

JLDSC has a host of activities planned for Jersey's guests, including a swim from Green Island to the Lido.

Sally says she is really excited.

"There will be seven people who will be inducted, so it's big!  It's a big event in the world of marathon swimming and I am honoured that we are holding it in our beautiful isle of Jersey.

"We have a Friday night soiree and BBQ and buffet and I'm very excited to showcase our very beautiful lido, which is over 130 years old."

The seven new honorees will be inducted at an awards ceremony at the Hotel Ambassador, and the delegation will take a historical tour of the island.

On Sunday, the Lido will host a 'swimming congress' where swimmers will discuss open and long distance swimming.

The event is taking place from Friday 17 May to Sunday 19 May 2025.
