Seven in ten islanders call for cost-of-living crisis resolution

A new survey reveals that inflation is one of the biggest concerns for people in Jersey.

The Big Question Survey 2025 shows that 77% of islanders think inflation and shop prices are an important issue in Jersey, with 1 in 5 people thinking it is the most important issue.

People here want the cost-of-living crisis to be the top priority for improvement over the next five years (70%), over hospital waiting lists (48%), affordable housing (43%) and social care (39%).

This differs from other jurisdictions, with Guernsey prioritising affordable housing (68%) and the Isle of Man wanting hospital waiting lists slashed (66%)

Survey respondents were asked to select all issues they considered important, and then a follow-up question asked which issue was the most important for their island today.

However, despite these issues, more islanders who responded to the survey are happier, with nearly three-quarters of people saying they are 'six or above on a scale of how they view their quality of life, with zero being the worst and 10 being the best.

Two-thirds of islanders also believe their life is better in Jersey than in the UK.

The survey revealed some differences between ages and political views, with respondents over the age of 60 with right-wing political views, being more likely to believe they have a higher quality of life and would prefer to live in the island.

601 islanders responded to the survey in 2025.

Despite a range of political views and ages, and an overall feeling that life is better in the island, more than two-thirds of respondents believe Jersey's politics is going in the wrong direction.

9 in 10 islanders do not believe they influence decisions made in Jersey, with 1 in 4 people considering not voting in the 2026 General Election.

It comes as the island's politicians voted for a weekend election to boost the number of people turning up to the polling stations.

Almost three-quarters of people do not think politicians represent their views, with only 1% believing that States Members represent their views 'very well'.

Just under half of the respondents say they will 'definitely vote' next year, and only 11% think things are 'looking up' in the island.
