40°C possible for Jersey midweek

We've been getting the latest from Jersey Met on this week's extreme temperatures...

Jersey is set to get its hottest ever day, with a chance it could even reach 40°C.

Currently, we're forecast highs of 37°C on Tuesday (23 June) and Wednesday (24 June).

The heat record for June could be broken today (Monday) if it exceeds 33.4°C, as is predicted:

However, giving Channel 103 an updated on expected conditions mid-morning, Andre Steau from Jersey Met says we should prepare for even hotter weather to come.

We asked if there is the chance of hitting 40°C here:

"This should not be excluded we have some tools that we use to measure the potential temperatures we could reach, and some of them are indicating it could be indeed even 40 degrees, especially for Wednesday."

Jersey is almost certain to exceed its all-time record of 37.9°C  on 18 July 2022.

"I would say it is perhaps 80-90% that this will be broken in the next few days.

"It's a tropical air mass that is pushing in and starting to get stuck, and that is why it is getting hotter and hotter everyday across western Europe.

Jersey has its earliest ever heatwave at the end of May, with five consecutive days above 28°C.

Warmest Jersey spring on record... again

Andre says this one will be hotter and more humid.

"The humidity in the atmosphere is higher and higher because of this hot air mass that is advancing, it has also some humidity that it grabbed through the Mediterranean travelling into here. So, we have higher humidity overall and much high temperatures than what we had in May."
