The GSPCA has released three of the pups it has been caring for over the winter.
Under blue skies and spring sunshine at Portelet on Saturday (14 March) three seal pups were released back into the sea by the GSPCA.
All had become separated from their mothers during the winter storms and were underweight and unwell.
The head of marine mammals at the GSPCA, Geoff George, says everything went to plan:
“Avalanche, Glacier and Frosty have each had their own challenges during their rehabilitation, but they’ve been an absolute joy to care for.
"We prepared a special ramp from the temporary rehab pool to help with boxing them for transport, and it worked brilliantly.
"We had all three pups safely into their travel kennels in record time.
"Watching them head back into the sea today was incredibly rewarding. They were calm, confident and behaved exactly as healthy seals should. I’m extremely proud of how far they’ve come and grateful to everyone who supports the work we do.”
Despite being challenged for space the GSPCA has looked after seven pups this winter and says the remaining four are putting on weight well.
Most of the Shelter's outbuildings have been knocked down to be replaced by a new wildlife hospital and before the start of the seal pup season the GSPCA warned it would be hard to care for too many seals.
Since 2012 the GSPCA has nursed 48 seal pups back to health and says although the breeding season is nearly over, there may yet be some that need care.
The message is to contact the Shelter and give the mammal's location but do not attempt to touch it.
